Übersicht
This programme is based on studies of natural sciences, medicine and basic principles of primary eye care service. Bachelor programme is the first step in professional optometrist education scheme in Latvia. The program offers extensive profile studies of natural sciences including organic chemistry, biology, calculus, physics, medical courses including human anatomy and physiology, pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology of the eye, physiology of vision, specific courses in optometry – optics, geometrical optics, ophthalmic optics, optometric instruments, refractive defects, binocular vision and other.
The topic of the Bachelor’s thesis should be carefully chosen; supervisor’s assistance for further research. Students will be able to continue education in Professional Master in Clinical Optometry degree programme.
The part-time programme covers 4 academic years, full-time programme covers 3 academic years.
Programmstruktur
Knowledge:
1. about structure (anatomy) of the human body and the human eye, their physiology, visual perception, and normal and pathological processes, as well as processes affecting the formation, perception, and processing of visual information in the visual system;
2. about external and internal factors, their action principles and impact on the human body in general and the visual system in particular;
3. about application of different materials, tools, and methods in the assessment and understanding of the visual processes, including also their application in the evaluation of other functions of the body related to the visual system and the visual information perception;
4. about the development stages of the research projects, application of methods and business development principles in health care, and related normative acts and regulations in practice places of a vision specialist.
Skills:
5. to calculate the optical lens system, including parameters of the optical system of the eye, formation of images in optical systems;
6. to recognize and distinguish different materials used in vision correction (spectacles, contact lenses, intraocular lenses) and to describe the properties, types, and designs of the materials, as well as to distinguish refractive defects of vision and visual system disorders, to perform methods for visual system evaluation, to create and apply visual stimuli in the assessment of visual functions;
7. to measure and evaluate the physical parameters of external conditions and their impact on the functionality of the visual system and the occurrence of possible vision disorders;
8. to perform physical, psychophysical, physiological measurements applicable to human and material studies, the statistical analyses of acquired results by applying various methods as required by laboratory, practical and scientific works, as well as working creatively and engaging in group work with appropriate communication skills.
Competence:
9. to recommend the best type of vision correction tool to the patient and to train first-time contact lens wearers in accordance with the vision correction prescribed, to make and adjust spectacle frames to the human face parameters, as well as to take vision prevention measures for use of vision correction tools, to take vision protection measures and reduce negative impact of external conditions, promoting the application of the principles of medical ethics;
10. to read scientific articles independently and meaningfully on the studied topics, to manage academic writing and basic communication skills, to plan one’s work and perform small scientific studies under the supervision of a supervisor, as well as to work independently and take responsibility for individual learning in professional development.
