Overview

The BA (Hons) in Business Management (Finance) program trains students in specialized skills that will enable them to take up a position in the finance industry. Students will be introduced to the key concepts of accounting that will expand their knowledge in financial analysis and financial projections and develop their teamwork, leadership and project management skills through the work and assessments that they undertake. In addition, students will learn to critically evaluate strategic business issues while refining their financial decision-making processes and developing a creative approach to problem-solving.

Programme structure

The BA (Hons) in Business Management (Finance) is a six-semester, three-year program (180 ECTS). The core courses taught during the first year will give students a solid grounding in all essential business disciplines, while the second and third years incorporate their chosen pathway, in addition to the core courses.

Cost Analyst

A cost analyst’s role is to control a company’s expenses and optimize costs. They will develop budgets, oversee financial transactions and track and prepare reports for top management. These professionals are expected to benchmark costs within an industry and to know industry trends and developments which may lead to cost savings. Their daily tasks may also involve accounting, bookkeeping and the approval and payment of invoices.

A cost analyst should be analytical, detailed-oriented and proficient in corporate finance.

Financial Analyst

Financial analysts assist investors with mergers, acquisitions, corporate expansions and restructuring by providing information about stocks, bonds, companies and industries, among others. They are tasked with undertaking research on markets and companies and should be abreast of financial and market trends. These professionals commonly work with complicated data and are required to write their findings and recommendations in extensive reports for investment strategic decision-making.

To succeed in this profession, a good skillset in finance, research and data analysis is needed as well as good communication and presentation skills.

Accounts Payable Specialist

Accounts payable specialists are in charge of processing and making payments. Working within the finance department, their tasks include reimbursing employees for expenses made, processing invoices, ensuring creditor payments are made and checking income. These professionals are also in charge of bookkeeping and the financial transactions used by accountants and auditors for tax reporting and will look for ways to improve costs. Professionals within this field require excellent analytical and organizational skills.

To succeed as an accounts payable specialist, candidates should be highly organized and demonstrate excellent numerical skills and knowledge in finance.

Financial Planner

Financial planners, or personal financial advisors, look after the financial interests of individuals, families and/or businesses to help them reach their short- and long-term financial goals. They will analyze debt, expenses, investments, savings and insurance plans, among other financial obligations, to create recommendations for their clients. These may include investment and saving options.

A financial planner will have investment knowledge and be skilled in research activities. They will need interpersonal skills to establish trust with their client portfolio.
