Why Choose Clinical Laboratory Sciences?
The EC CLS 3+1 major prepares you to become a clinical laboratory scientist, medical laboratory scientist, or a medical technologist – jobs that are in very high demand worldwide. CLS graduates perform laboratory tests on patient samples and provide life-saving blood banking services as critical players in patient diagnosis and treatment in a wide range of hospital, laboratory, and university settings.
What Clinical Laboratory Sciences Will Teach You
The EC CLS 3+1 major is similar to a Biology or Biochemistry major (with courses in cell and molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, anatomy, and physiology), with the coursework completed in three years and the fourth year spent training in hospital laboratories at one of our clinical affiliate sites in Rochester, Sayre, Jamestown, or Brooklyn. Following the clinical year, students may opt to take the ASCP licensing exam. In New York State, a major in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (not Biology or Biochemistry) is a requirement for NYS licensure.
Where Clinical Laboratory Sciences Can Take You
Looking for a career in health care? Want to diagnose patients and save lives? Do you love working at the lab bench? The CLS program is for you! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in these fields are expected to grow 11% between 2020-2030, which is faster than the average growth for all jobs.
Структура программы
CLS majors will spend three years completing their course work and the fourth year performing hands-on training at an affiliated hospital laboratory in Rochester, Sayre, Jamestown, or Brooklyn.
Карьерные возможности
EC’s Clinical Laboratory Sciences program will prepare you to become a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), and/or Medical Technologist (MT), jobs that are in extremely high demand at hospitals, research centers, clinics, and universities worldwide.
You’ll be well prepared to complete the ASCP licensing exam following your clinical year. A major in CLS (not biology) is a requirement for NYS licensure, so if you are considering working in a diagnostic laboratory someday, this program is for you.
After three years of coursework at EC, you’ll spend your fourth year (“+1” year) training at one of our clinical affiliate hospitals before earning your EC degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
(This clinical year takes the place of the required internship for graduation.) The clinical year includes hands-on training in many of the specialty areas of clinical laboratory science, including hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking. Our four clinical affiliate sites include Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania; UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown, New York; New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York; and Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, New York.
